He’s a bike messenger who has been riding since he was 5 years old. He races both road and cyclocross, blasting Eve’s “Let me Blow Your Mind” from his Ipod and really really likes Picante Mexicana burritos.

“Cycling provides a means to actively, mentally and physically take on the challenges and road blocks everyday. It also gives me the ability to eat ANYTHING AS MUCH AS AND HOWEVER I WANT, which I have discovered plays a very very large role in personal happiness.”

His main qualm with the cycling in Boston?

“The lack of road/commuter etiquette I encounter on a day to day basis. I’m talking about the other bicyclists that feel they need to turn their commute home into a freak’ time trial. Last week on my usual slow cruise home, I was yelled at for not going fast enough in the bike lane. NOT FAST ENOUGH?!?! Come ON!.”

As most of you know, Boston has been hit with its first stint of seasonal weather. How does Matt, a competitive and occupational cyclist keep up?

” Honestly, I will always take snow over anything. During the winter, I hate sitting around it makes the day go by slower and you feel like crap, i just wanna keep moving! Staying warm is better than staying dry, do whatever you can to stay warm, it will keep your senses sharp and sometimes doing the homework for the other guy its just as important to look for someone on top of looking for yourself.”

Advice for novice winter cyclists?

“Always assume that they, motorists, don’t see you! It’s not like the nice weather, people look even less because it’s crappy out. Motorists don’t think that there will be bike riders in cold weather, but cycling doesn’t disappear, there’s still a very strong crowd of riders who ride all around the clock!”
