Independence Day Mountain Bike Ride

posted by Jason on 2011.07.06 , under Group Ride, Holiday, Review

This Independence Day Steph and I took the opportunity of the shop being closed to take a trip up to Ipswich and do some Mountain Biking in Willowdale State Forest. I personally love Willowdale because it is very different than all the other places I ride in the Boston Area. Most places, like the Fells and Lynn Woods are very technical with large rocks, lots of roots and very steep terrain, which in my opinion is very fun, but sometimes it is nice to change things up a bit. Willowdale has miles of smooth flowing tight and twisty single track where you can really fly through the trails and keep your momentum up. Also since it is farther from the city there are fewer people on the trails and I have never been chased by the dreaded off leash dogs that plague the fells and are always nipping at my heals. I think my favorite thing about Willowdale however is the River running right through the park which is always a great retreat from the heat after a nice long summer ride.

Boston Bike Rides

Now that the weather is actually cooperating, it’s time to get on the road. While cycling around the city can be fun, sometimes its great to get outside of the city and check out what the Greater Boston area has to offer.

Here’s a list of five awesome bike rides, in varying lengths, that any cyclist can enjoy.

1.) Castle Island

This is one of my personal favorites, about 11 miles round trip from the Kenmore area. This route takes you through downtown, to the harbor and finally to Castle Island. It’s a perfect place to have a picnic, watch the sunset and take a dip in Pleasure Bay (I’m totally serious).

2.) Minuteman Bike Path

The Minuteman bike path whisks its riders from Arlington, MA through Lexington and finally drops them off in Bedford. About a 30ish mile round trip, this is the perfect ride for a weekday (also pretty fabulous during the weekend, but there’s definitely a lot more foot and wheel traffic on Saturday and Sunday). There’s a bicycle shop located at the end of the trail, perfect for a light snack, and on the way back might I suggest you check out Ride Studio Cafe at 1720 Massachussetts Avenue in Lexington Center for an amazing cup of pour-over coffee made fresh to your order.

3.) Walden Pond

Who doesn’t like a bike ride to Walden Pond? It’s the perfect destination at any time of day, be it morning afternoon or evening. Check out what Thoreau was psyched about and take a dip while you’re at it!

4.) Cutler Park

With 19 miles of trails, a lake and lots of landscape, Cutler Park is the perfect multifaceted destination. It’s a pretty popular destination for an array of cyclists, so you’re bound to meet some new friends whilst eating lunch.

5.) Salem Willows

If you want to do more than 20ish miles, and have a road bike handy, I recommend checking out the Salem Willows Arcade. A nice 40 to 50 mile ride (depending on your route) round trip will take you to this awesome North Shore town rich in history and arcade games. Play pinball for hours, check out downtown touristy shops, thumb through more books than you’ve ever seen in one room in your life at Derby Square Books and get some ice cream at Cafe Kushco. If you don’t want to take the trek back, not a problem, you and your bicycle can take the commuter rail back together!

Enjoy your summer and ride safely!

Chainlynx Maiden Voyage!

posted by Steph on 2011.07.01 , under Group Ride, Summer

We had to delay our first Chainlynx due to an uncooperative mother nature. Yesterday Boston pulled through, and gave us a perfectly balmy high 70 degree temperature and soft winds.

Unfortunately this week seemed to be the worst week for a lot of Boston dames, but we got an intimate crew together at 7:00 PM to check out Castle Island.

Stretching it out at Castle Island on a bench.

Jessica and Darcey enjoy the sunset on the grass.

The Island was bustling with activity–everyone wanted a piece of the sunset.

…and who could blame them?! The sun sets over the Boston skyline as a lonely balloon floats up into the atmosphere.

See you guys in a few weeks, with more ladies and probably a slightly longer route!
