If you’ve been riding around Boston long enough, you’ve probably seen a man drumming and occasionally tapping a cow bell on his bike.

Well, here he is:

Meet Greg.

“I started drumming in Middle School with a Marching Band, then I ended up going to BU Bikes and seeing Galen, the creator of the group with a drum set on his bike. I thought, ‘I could do this!’ and I did. After the first few times of almost dying I got the hang of it. We would go to critical masses and even drum during the Midnight Marathon bike ride.”

If you’re into group rides, you’ve probably experienced Greg’s drumming.

“Group rides are great. It’s a cool way to explore the city and meet people who enjoy riding bikes. I really enjoy (and still frequent) Critical Mass. Sometimes people are suprised when they find out I really enjoy Critical Mass, but honestly a really big bike ride with 100 people is guaranteed fun no matter what. I also go out every Wednesday for the Wednesday Social Ride ”

Greg’s love for group rides inspired him to create a special Boston Marathon Midnight ride.

“There was a Thursday Midnight Ride awhile back where lots of people would show up, and I wanted to start something similiar again. I had friends who were talking about running the marathon the night before and that planted the idea in my mind to combine the marathon and bike ride. I brought it up to the BU Bikes meeting and told people about it and they all thought it was awesome.”

In its second year, the marathon ride is an incredible success.

“We had people get to the trains at 9 PM this year, there were 100 people at 9:30. Together we totaled 700 people who participated in the bike ride, and over 600 who used the MBTA system to get to Hopkinton. I want people to ride bikes and make friends. I guess it’s working!”
